The team behind the Balerno Inn.
In my younger days, I knew of the Malleny Arms or the honky as it was affectionately known by the locals. Whilst visiting friends in Balerno in 2019, I observed the inn had ceased trading and had fallen into dangerous disrepair.
I made some general enquires as to the likely future of the building, and all the responses came back bleak. It looked as though the building would go to ruin.
But this building has a long, colourful history and is part of the Balerno community. It had to be saved and restored. In partnership with my good friend William, we devised a plan to reinstate the beating heart to Balerno. We thought the building would be a somewhat simple and straightforward repair, but apparently someone forgot to tell us about the complex process and unforseen issues that go into renovating an old, crumbling building…dry rot, wet rot, nail rot, collapsed drains, subsidence, falling beams, burnt-out wiring and a fractured gas supply plus many more. Ouch!

Fast forward 11 months later, a few grey hairs gained and a few lbs$ shed. We are so proud to deliver the magnificent Balerno Inn. We’ve designed the space based on our vision of being the one place where you bring your family and stay awhile. It’s a place where you can spend that special occasion or go to when you just want a night off from cooking. It’s the place where you go after that muddy walk with the dogs. It’s everything you might have hoped for and so much more.
Casual dining inside & out plus so much more…
Relax and dine in our beautifully restored bar and restaurant area. There are two private dining rooms that will accommodate parties up to 50. We also added an incredible outdoor garden with plenty of patio seating guests can enjoy year round. Make your experience even more unique with our outdoor bothys – small cabins – each seat up to six adults and are a fun way to hang out and catch up with family and friends. There’s also a secure and safe play area for the wee ones. We’ve gone to great lengths to make sure everyone has a comfortable and enjoyable time when visiting our establishment.
And lest we forget, the five guest bedrooms are to die for! When you stay the night at the Balerno Inn, you are guaranteed a wonderful night’s sleep in luxurious surroundings.
To make this your special place to visit, we’ve assembled a team of staff who have energy, passion for great Scottish hospitality and eagerness to always deliver an exceptional experience for our guests.
Chef Andy is a book of talent. He loves to cook with incredible ingredients and takes pride in teaching and encouraging his brigade. At the front of house, Gemma and Sophie will greet you with a smile and ensure your needs are met each and every time.
